Sigur Rós playing for Dalai Lama

Pitchfork is reporting that Icelandic ambient rock band Sigur Rós have been tapped to play for his Holiness the Dalai Lama when he travels to Reykjavík for a visit on June 2nd.

The band will be playing “Odin’s Raven Magic” which is an orchestral collaboration that will be performed with composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson. Now while this is huge for the band they’ve also got a lot more on their plate.

Lead singer Jónsi is working on a solo record as well as an ambient record called Riceboy Sleeps. The band also posted on their website that they are currently working on a new LP that has been described by them as “more ambient”, “slower” and “less noisy”. More ambient and slower? Have they listened to their own stuff recently? You guys go to their Myspace page and tell me what you hear.
