Slayer talks new album

There was a kid that lived in my dorm when I was at Rutgers named Jesse. And his room was very visible from outside. The reason? The gigantic Slayer flag that hung in the window. He would talk to me endlessly about Slayer and how amazing they were and how they shaped his idea of music. Well I’m sure Jesse will be thrilled to hear that Slayer is releasing a new album late this summer.

Guitarist Kerry King announced the band’s ninth album, World Painted Blood, will be in stores after they finish their tour with Marilyn Manson. This will be Slayer’s newest album since 2006′s Christ Illusion. In an interview with Billboard.com, King talked about how excited he was that fellow guitarist Jeff Hanneman contributed to the writing on this record.

“I like when Jeff writes as much as he did for this record. When you have one guy doing most of the writing you only get one perspective,” said King. “A lot of Jeff’s stuff has a very punky vibe this time; the stuff I write sounds thrashy but with a hint of punk, and when Jeff writes the stuff is more punk with a hint of thrash. It works together well.”

World Painted Blood also marks the first time that the band created and wrote their songs in the studio as opposed to preparing songs in advance, according to King. “I was kind of thinking, ‘Man, this could be the first record in a long time that’s got a little bit of filler.’ But I think every song came out great.”
