Radiohead – Harry Patch (In Memory Of)

Radiohead have just released a brand new song and are giving you the chance to download it.

The name of the song is “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)” and it’s dedicated to Harry Patch who was the last living U.K. veteran of World War I but recently passed away at the age of 111. Before he died, Patch did an interview with the BBC’s Radio 4 before he died and it had an emotional impact on lead singer Thom Yorke.

“The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me. It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death,” Yorke said. “I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor. It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us. I hope we do not forget. As Harry himself said: “Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims”.

The song, even though it was recorded a few weeks before Patch’s death, is a lovely tribute to the veteran. The song was recorded in an abbey and the strings were arranged by guitarist/composer Jonny Greenwood. You can definitely hear the emotion in Thom’s voice as he sings the lines “I am the only one that got through. The others died where ever they fell.” It’s slow, it’s haunting, it’s great.

Check out the song below and head over here to download it. It’ll cost you a little over a dollar for the download but the proceeds go to the Royal British Legion so it’s worth it.
