R.I.P. Jim Carroll

Jim Carroll, writer of The Basketball Diaries, poet and rocker, died on Friday September 11th at the age of 60 due to a heart attack, according to Pitchfork (via the New York Times).

Carroll was a renowned poet before forming the Jim Carroll Band in the 70′s. His music grabbed the attention of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards and the band was signed to a deal with Atlantic Records. He would record three albums with the band before breaking up in the 80′s. He would release a solo album in 1998, Pools of Mercury, but also collaborated with bands like Blue Oyster Cult and Rancid.

Most notably, however, Carroll is known for his book The Basketball Diaries which chronicles his life in the 60′s as a high school basketball star addicted to drugs. The book would go on to be a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role of Carroll.

If you’re not familiar with Carroll’s work then you have some homework to do. Find some of his poetry or at least watch The Basketball Diaries.
