The trailer for American Idiot: The Musical

So during my life, rock nation, I’ve acted in plays and musicals. Am I a great actor? Not really (although I did manage to charm the girls from some shows into bed with me…maybe it’s because I was the only straight guy.) BUT I do know what it takes to make a great musical on stage. Good singers, good music, fine direction and other ingredients. So when I checked out the trailer for the musical version of American Idiot I wasn’t all that impressed.

Now I’m no theater critic so I won’t point out the small things that make this trailer seem unexciting. However, being a fan of Green Day’s epic album, it looks and sounds as if the stage version won’t do the record justice. Hearing a cast break into the chorus of the title track lacks the power and raw energy that the song had. Now I know that overdubbing guitars and adding effects to the vocals in a studio definitely help but where I want to hear distortion I hear pretty harmonies. I want to see a mosh pit and I get finely trained dancers doing a choreographed piece.

I realize that this post may seem a bit unfair since it’s based solely on a trailer of the show but a trailer is supposed to get you excited for an upcoming release. This fails to do the job. Hopefully Billie Joe and the people who catch the stage version are happy with the end result because if this is the best the trailer could do for me then I’ll just save my money for Mamma Mia. You be the judge and watch for yourself up top.
