The Decemberists – The Rake’s Song

The Decemberists are a band that I should talk about more. They’re an amazing group of musicians that really know how to tell a story within song. Which is why everyone should pick up their album The Hazards of Love immediately. The album has been out for a few months now but they’ve finally released a video for their first single “The Rake’s Song”.

The video took so long to do because it was done by two art students, Alex Dashino and Varvara Volodina, who hail from London’s Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design. The video expertly puts together the images of a rake who gets married at the age of 21, has children and then proceeds to murder his family. Yet murder never had such a good beat to it until this song.

In addition to the new music video, Colin Meloy and his merry band will be playing The Hazards of Love in its entirety on October 19th at UCLA’s Royce Hall in L.A.(via Consequence of Sound). The best part about the show? They’ll be playing the album with animation accompanying the music. Could this be a better experience than a Pink Floyd Laser Light show at every planetarium on the planet? Quite possibly.

Check out the video up top and then go buy the album. This isn’t a record you should download so if I find out you did then we’re through.
