Hulk Hogan wanted to play bass with Metallica

When I was a kid I loved Hulk Hogan. He was an icon in my eyes. Recently, however, with all the shit he’s gone through, it’s kind of difficult to recall those images. But this bit of info really shook up my idea of the red and yellow wrestler.

In his new autobiography, Hogan reveals that he applied to be the bassist for Metallica (via The Chicago Tribune). “When Metallica was looking for a bass player, I called and never heard a word back from them either. I would have quit wrestling in a heartbeat to be a bass player for Metallica.” I don’t think Cliff Burton would have approved of this.

Not only did he try for Metallica’s bass job but also the Rolling Stones! “I was in England presenting an award with Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger’s ex, and she told me the [Rolling] Stones were looking for a bass player,” said Hogan. “I sent her a ton of merchandise that she asked for and said ‘Tell Mick I’m a great bass player.’ I never heard a word back.”

Could you imagine “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” or “Enter Sandman” with the Hulkster on bass? He physically wouldn’t fit in with the rest of the bands. Having met him a few times when I worked at Sirius I can honestly tell you that he is a massive mountain of man. Plus if Mick or Lars ever crossed him while on stage, he would lay them out with his patented leg drop.

I found this video of Hulk playing bass with the band Diamondback on a cover of “Johnny B. Goode”. Watch it down below.
