American Idiot is coming to Broadway

Green Day’s album American Idiot made it’s way to the stage back in September as a musical at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California. The final show is on November 15th but the curtain won’t fall just yet on this production as it’s set to make its Broadway debut in 2010.

John Gallagher, Jr., the actor who plays the lead role of Jimmy, tweeted, “The idiots are coming to New York! Just waiting on when and where.” It was later confirmed by the show’s spokesman Michael Hartman when he said, “There is a Broadway future for the show, but at this time no dates or theater are confirmed.”

The musical was a passion project done by the members of Green Day and director Michael Mayer who has won a Tony Award for his work on the show Spring Awakening. Playbill reported that American Idiot was the highest grossing show for the Berkeley Rep.

2010 is gearing up to be the year Broadway goes rock n’ roll. You’ve got American Idiot, Bono and The Edge’s Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark and Regina Spektor writing songs for an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty and Run-DMC possibly coming out with a musical of their own. All we need now is that adaptation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and we’ll be all squared away.
