Beck – “Harry Partch”

Oh, Beck Hansen. You know just how to make everyone smile, don’t you? Guys, we have ourselves some brand new Beck due to a mistake by The Fiery Furnaces talkin’ shite about Radiohead…allow me to explain.
Matt Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces recently talked to Spinner and had some choice statements about Radiohead and their writing of a song in memory of Harry Patch, the British World War I veteran. “‘Oh, please listen to our new song about Harry Patch’. Fuck you! You brand yourself by brazenly and arbitrarily associating yourself with things that you know people consider cool, That is bogus. That’s a put-on. That’s a branding technique, and Radiohead have their brand that they’re popular and intelligent, so they have a song about Harry Patch.”
Friedberger continued by asking, “How’s the song? Is it 48 notes to the octave? What does it have to do with Harry Patch?” Now here’s where his mistake kicks in. First off, he’s talking shit about Radiohead. Never cool but on a less personal note he asks if the song is in 48 notes to the octave which has nothing to do with Harry Patch but American composer Harry Partch (via CoS). Poor boy had his references mixed up.
So amidst all this blind rage towards Radiohead and an American composer, in steps Sénor Hansen to make light of the situation. Down below, you can check out Beck’s brand new song “Harry Partch” which, according to his website, “is a tribute to the composer and his desire to make the body and music unified into what he termed ‘Corporeality.’ The song employs Partch’s 43 tone scale, which expands conventional tonality into a broader variation of frequencies and resonances.”
Cool points for Beck stepping up and defending Radiohead while making a fool out of young Friedberger. So let’s all support Beck and, in addition to listening to this song, go watch his new video with Charlotte Gainsbourg for their song “Heaven Can’t Wait”.
