Grammy nominations revealed

First off let me just say that I am not a fan of the Grammy awards. Most of the time they nominate albums that either flew under the radar or sell millions of copies. This year’s Grammys are no different as the nominees were just announced and I am just as disappointed. If you want to see the full list of nominees then click right here.

Now being that this is a rock music blog we’re going to focus on the rock music nominees but we must start with the big three: Record, Album and Song of the Year since rock bands are up for those awards. So let’s start with Record of the Year.

Record of the Year
Beyoncé – “Halo”
Black Eyed Peas – “I Gotta Feeling”
Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody”
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Taylor Swift – “You Belong To Me”

Album of the Year
Beyoncé – I Am…Sasha Fierce
Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King
Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D.
Lady Gaga – The Fame
Taylor Swift – Fearless

Song of the Year
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody”
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”
Maxwell – “Pretty Wings”
Taylor Swift – “You Belong To Me”

Now just from those three nominations I can automatically tell that KOL and DMB are out of the running. Would it be amazing if they did win? Of course but when you’re surrounded by artists who made the record labels money by selling tons of albums and got played all over the radio this year you probably can put your monopoly money on them.

Now on to the reason this blog exists: rock music. However the nominations for the rock music categories was also disappointing. So many bands got no recognition yet they released incredible albums! But I’ll get into that later. So here are your rock n’ roll nominees for the Grammys.

Best New Artist
The Ting Tings
Silversun Pickups
MGMT
Keri Hilson
Zac Brown Band

Now I’m hoping that none of the rock acts win in this category solely because there’s a curse that accompanies winning this award. Usually the best new artist’s next album flops big time so let’s just hand that one off to Keri Hilson or Zac Brown. BTW just a quick update for you. MGMT’s song “Kids” was nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. Isn’t that nice?

Best Rock Solo Vocal Performance
Bob Dylan – “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”
Bruce Springsteen – “Working On A Dream”
Prince – “Dreamer”
Neil Young – “Fork In The Road”
John Fogerty – “Change In The Weather”

Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
Coldplay – “Life In Technicolor II”
Green Day – “21 Guns”
U2 – “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”
Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood – “Can’t Find My Way Home”
Kings Of Leon – “Use Somebody”

Best Hard Rock Performance
AC/DC – “War Machine”
Alice In Chains – “Check My Brain”
Linkin Park – “What I’ve Done”
Metallica – “The Unforgiven III”
Nickelback – “Burn It To The Ground”

How about we burn Nickelback to the ground? How the shit did these rejects get nominated for anything? Although I will commend the Grammys for nominating Alice In Chains, AC/DC and Metallica. Although “The Unforgiven III” wasn’t the song I would have picked for Metallica’s nom. But I digress.

Best Metal Performance
Judas Priest – “Dissident Aggressor”
Slayer – “Hate Worldwide”
Ministry – “Señor Peligro”
Lamb Of God – “Set To Fail”
Megadeth – “Head Crusher”

Best Rock Song
Pearl Jam – “The Fixer”
U2 – “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”
Green Day – “21 Guns”
Kings Of Leon – “Use Somebody”
Bruce Springsteen – “Working On A Dream”

I have to say I was quite surprised that KOL was getting love for “Use Somebody” when “Sex On Fire” pretty much introduced the band to America. Perhaps Grammy wants to go for the more epic sounding tune and stay away from the sex? Possible. Moving on!

Best Rock Album
AC/DC – Black Ice
Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood – Live From Madison Square Garden
Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown
U2 – No Line On The Horizon
Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King

Now because Dave Matthews is nominated in the Best Rock Album category, does this mean that he’ll win here and not Album Of The Year which leaves it open for one of the pop stars to take? Hmmm…a shady move made by Grammy perhaps? We’ll see on Grammy night. Stick with me because we got one more category which is…

Best Alternative Album
Death Cab For Cutie – The Open Door
Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz!
David Byrne & Brian Eno – Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
Depeche Mode – Sounds Of The Universe

So there you have it. Your rock grammy nominations for 2010…disappointing isn’t it? For some reason no love was given to some of the bigger and better albums of the year. Where’s Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear? The Dead Weather and Muse? Wilco and Arctic Monkeys? These were all solid albums and yet they’re not eligible for a golden statuette? You’ve done us wrong again, Grammy.

What do you guys think? Who should have been nominated? Who shouldn’t be nominated…I go with Nickelback on that one. Fuck ‘em.
