Paul McCartney backs RATM for number one record

In a somewhat surprising, yet interesting, turn of events, Paul McCartney has weighed in on the Rage Against The Machine/X-Factor battle for the number one record in the U.K.

NME reports that Sir Paul is actually pulling for RATM to take the number one Christmastime chart position. The reason it’s surprising is because McCartney actually performed on X-Factor with the winner Joe McElderry.

“I like the idea of this Rage Against The Machine thing that’s happening,” McCartney said to Sky News. “I think that’s kind of interesting.”

McCartney went on to wish the best of luck to McElderry but also talked about why he would want to see “Killing In The Name” rise to the top come Christmastime. “Everyone expects Joe to do it, and he certainly will sell a lot of records. And if he gets to Number One, good luck to him. But it would be kind of funny if a band like Rage Against The Machine got it, because it would prove a point.”

At last count, McElderry’s record was catching up to Rage but is still behind by about 36,000 copies. If you still haven’t heard RATM’s interview and live performance on BBC Radio 5 then click right here.
