Rage Against The Machine are number one!

Never was there more of a Christmas miracle then what has just occured in the U.K. After an online facebook group that amassed almost a million people and over half a million sales of the song “Killing in the Name”, Rage Against The Machine has beaten X-Factor winner Joe McElderry for the number one spot on the charts.

NME has reported that RATM beat out McElderry with 500,000 purchases of “Killing in the Name” to 450,000 purchases of McElderry’s cover of the Miley Cyrus cover “The Climb”.

The race for number one became extremely close at one point with Rage only up by 9,000. But due to a push by the fans and Tom Morello’s twitter page, 200,000 copies of RATM’s song were bought on December 18th & 19th and shot them to victory.

Even with the band getting cut off during their live performance on BBC Radio 5, the fans didn’t give up. In addition to all the purchases of “Killing in the Name”, £64,726 was raised for Shelter which is a charity for the homeless.

Because of this incredible movement and this massive upset on the charts, Rage Against The Machine will play a celebratory concert next year in the U.K. But this Christmas, families will be sitting around their tables eating turkey and opening presents around the tree while in the background they’ll hear the sounds of…

Merry Christmas, U.K. You’ve done the rock n’ roll world proud!
