Paul McCartney was almost in Them Crooked Vultures?!

Well turn me upside-down, tickle my belly and call me Biscuit (it’s a phrase I heard in Nashville). But it’s because of stories like this that make me utter ridiculous phrases like the previous one. Apparently, thanks to some digging by our boys over at CoS, Paul McCartney was approached to be the bassist for the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.

Sir Paul spoke to The Daily Mail recently and mentioned that Dave Grohl spoke to him about starting the new group.

We went out for a bite to eat afterwards and Dave told me he was starting this band with Josh. I asked him who was playing bass and he rather sheepishly told me he’d approached John. So you read it here first; Paul McCartney was nearly the bass player in Them Crooked Vultures. Actually, I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened but it’s an interesting project.

Hot diggity corndog if this isn’t a hoot of a story (sorry…more Nashville phrases). Now I still think that John Paul Jones is the better fit but let’s imagine for a moment that Macca was providing the low end for TCV. I think more records would have been sold, the venues they played would have been bigger and the exposure would have been greater.

But I don’t think McCartney would have fit with Homme and Grohl. He seems a bit too cheery. Which is why JPJ fits the role perfectly…but we can always wonder what could have been.
