Steven Tyler auditioned for Led Zeppelin

Steven Tyler is thinking of suing his band mates in Aerosmith should they pursue a new singer for the group. But, at one point, Tyler himself wanted to front another iconic band by the name of Led Zeppelin.

Noisecreep reports that Tyler spoke to Jimmy Page’s manager and flew out to England and auditioned to be the new singer for Zeppelin after singer Robert Plant turned down the idea of a reunion, according to guitarist Joe Perry.

“[He flew to London and tried] out for Led Zeppelin. It’s something I’ve never talked about before,” Perry said. “It’s a kind of window into how hard it’s been to keep the partnership together. It’s not the first time things like this have happened- that’s the downside of our relationship.”

So how did the audition go? Apparently they were “shambolic” as Perry described it. Tyler allegedly wasn’t familiar with Led Zep’s songs and thought they would work on new material.

“”Page felt really awkward about the audition,” Perry said. “Ultimately it was a group decision [to pass on Tyler].”

I’m actually glad that it didn’t work out. While Tyler has the range to sing Zeppelin songs, his voice just wouldn’t have matched the music. Plus, at the time, Aerosmith was still one big happy family so why would he have left his legendary band for what probably would have been a few reunion shows? Let’s all just be grateful.
