MGMT confirm release date for Congratulations

They may not have won Best New Artist at the Grammys but they do get one of the awards for most anticipated album of 2010.

Brooklyn duo MGMT have announced the release date, tracklisting and other info on their upcoming sophomore album Congratulations. Spin.com caught up with Andrew Vanwyngarden and got him to talk a bit about the new record.

“It’s definitely going to shock people,” Vanwyngarden said. “We dropped any sort of irony that was on the first record, and Congratulations feels true to who we really are.”

Congratulations comes out on April 13 and only features nine songs which, according to Vanwyngarden, are “sequenced to flow with sonic and thematic coherence.” He highlighted some of the songs including “Lady Dada’s Nightmare” which is an instrumental track that pays tribute to the current reigning pop star and a song called “It’s Working” which he said has a surfing vibe to it.

“When you’re surfing, there’s a specific break you’re paddling to. And when the waves are really good you say, ‘It’s working.’ The song kind of has a surf-y vibe. It’s like surfing on ecstasy!”

MGMT already have a full plate when it comes to touring. They’ll play at Coachella on April 17th followed by an appearance at the Bamboozle Festival here in New Jersey on May 2nd. The full tracklisting for Congratulations is down below.
