Green Day’s American Idiot headed for the silver screen?

Green Day’s album American Idiot hasn’t officially made its Broadway debut yet and there’s already talk of making it into a movie.
Word in the blogosphere is that the massive album turned musical is in discussions to be made into a feature film with actor Tom Hanks producing.
Hanks isn’t new to the movie-musical world. The last film his production company, Playtone, did that was a musical was Mamma Mia! which went on to earn over $600 million at the box office. Could Tom Hanks have the magic touch to make American Idiot a worldwide success on the screen?
Personally, I would much rather see a kick ass concert film with Green Day performing the entire album in front of hundreds of thousands of fans and have that directed by someone like Spielberg. Movie-musicals have never really got me hooked. But then again, this is from someone who hasn’t seen the musical yet and I hear it’s quite good.
I’m not knocking Green Day for this. They made a fantastic album and they deserve all the credit and laurels in the world for it. But, for me personally, I’d love to see them performed on the big screen by the band and not by actors who really wanna sing rock songs but in a showtune kinda way.
