MGMT goes prog-rock?

MGMT’s new album Congratulations currently has a lot of bloggers and reviewers scratching their heads about what to think of it. The following news, however, might make them scratch a bit more.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have said that they plan on performing songs from their first album, Oracular Spectacular, in more of a 1980′s prog-rock direction (via Contactmusic).
“I don’t think we’re gonna be playing ‘Kids’ that much, while some of those songs will be played differently, as we’d originally intended them to sound with a full band,” VanWynGarden said.
“‘Electric Feel’ we’ve changed quite a bit. It now has a more controlled, precise sound to it. I’d even say it’s taken a prog rock direction, sort of like 1980s Queen style maybe.”
They also addressed their second album and how they wanted it to have more of a positive outlook and be more upbeat.
“I think we could complain more but we just choose to focus on positive things but yeah, I think we realised that it would easy to fall into that trap of like, writing an album of, ‘Oh man, we’re like semi famous! What do we do now? It’s terrible!’”, said Goldwasser.
“I mean, some of the stuff on the album deals with fame and attention but overall the album’s about us having fun and making music that we really like and that we’ll enjoy playing live for the next year.”
Congratulations is in stores on April 13th. It’s currently streaming at the band’s website.
