MGMT rejected by Jay-Z for being too crazy

Remember when all the blogs (including this one) went crazy over the idea that MGMT was collaborating with Jay-Z for The Blueprint 3 but then got turned down? We now have our reason as to why that happened.

The band said in a recent interview that they took the wrong approach on the song that was sent to them by Jigga.

“We were under the impression they wanted us to go crazy,” Andrew VanWyngarden said. Apparently crazy was not the direction Hova wanted as their contribution was rejected.

Perhaps that was a pre-cursor to all the hoopla surrounding their newest album Congratulations. While I think it’s a bold step in their musical career, many critics are crying foul over the fact that the LP boasts no real singles.

“We used to think about how to make the most stereotypical pop song and that’s the ones we did. You can break it down. That repeating progression has been used in a gajillion pop songs,” VanWyngarden added.

Plus, according to the band, their image based on their first album was quite misunderstood.

“We were portrayed in a lot of articles as these partying-obsessed dance music fanatics. Which we thought was funny at first, and then we realized not many people understood what we are really trying to do,” said VanWyngarden.

So if another rapper is looking to collaborate with these guys to get a bit more indie cred they had better prepare to think out of the box.
