Preview Linkin Park’s new single, “The Catalyst”

Up top is a trailer for the video game Medal of Honor. Now I know that this isn’t a gaming site yet there has been a bit of content revolving around video games. Well that’s because all these bands want to release their music with popular gaming titles. In this instance, it’s Linkin Park.

It was recently announced that the band’s first single from their upcoming album, A Thousand Suns, will be the lead track in the soundtrack for the game. You’ll be able to hear a little bit of “The Catalyst” when you watch the trailer. But this leads me to my next question. Why the shit is LP making their first single an epic power ballad…again?

They made the same mistake with Minutes to Midnight when their first single was “What I’ve Done” instead of a song like “Given Up.” They should hit the fans with something hard and fast because, let’s be honest, their better albums were their earlier ones and those were chock full o’ songs in that vein. I know that Linkin Park wants to still achieve that “experimental rock band” title but it’s not gonna happen. If they stick with their strengths, they might not come off as so annoying.

A Thousand Suns is in stores on September 14th and Medal of Honor is in stores on October 12th.

Im curios as to what the new album will sound like. This seems pretty promising, really.

Disagree with your thoughts on Minutes to Midnight. If “Given Up” was the first single from that album I probably would’ve packed it in on Linkin Park and seen them as a one-trick pony. “What I’ve Done” may not have been their crowning achievement, but at least it showed that they were trying something different and not just going for Hybrid Theory, Part III. I love the first two LP albums, but I’ll always prefer a band that’s willing to expand and take risks, even if they don’t always pay off. Will LP ever be ‘experimental’? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean they should always be the angry rap-rock band either.

That said, I’m not 100% sold on “The Catalyst” yet, but I’m holding out hope.

You have your opinion about the band, and you have the usual one. “Linkin parks old albums were there best”
Im not saying you are wrong but over 90% of the people who answer that has never heard any album from the start to the end. And many of them haven’t even heard the full Minutes to Midnight.
Even through i agree that there first single for the new album shouldn’t be a ballad, you cant ignore that thats what rock band usual does? You cant jugde a song by one 1 minute of it, and you cant judge an album by it.

About the band not being Experimental… I would not say that they couldn’t. I meen this first single is 5:43 minutes long(thats experimental) and in the others previews it even sounds kinda Progg.

And if never heard the full MTM, then you would never have heard the song – The Little Things Give You Away… Thats an very Exeperimental song… I personally hope thats the way the new album is going

I’m not sure how I feel about what I’ve heard of this song, yet. But, I will say this: I’m preeeetty sure it isn’t a “power ballad”. If you go on youtube and look for the couple other samples of the song that have been released, you will find that the rest of the song (the part in the trailer here is the outro, btw) is actually really uptempo.
