Listen: Linkin Park – “The Catalyst”

Another band has used a video game trailer to release their brand new song. Avenged Sevenfold did it with “Welcome to the Family” and now Linkin Park has done it with their brand new single, “The Catalyst.” The video up top was directed by LP DJ Joe Hahn.

The single, from their upcoming album A Thousand Suns, unfortunately doesn’t bring the band back to their distorted guitar past. Instead, we’re getting a quasi-dance song with techno beats and breakdowns shown over footage of digital soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. Not gonna lie to you, though. I’m no fan of this song at all.

I’m all for bands trying to push their sound forward but when you completely abandon where you came from, then that’s when I start to get upset. Ever since LP started doing songs for Transformers soundtracks, they’ve been shying away from plugging in a guitar and ripping through a riff. Instead, they’ve opted for Pro Tools and computer sounds thinking that’s what people want to hear from them. It’s definitely not.

Maybe this is just a real bad choice for a first single and the rest of the album does bring real instruments into the mix. But i’m not holding my breath. If you’re a fan, however, then you should know that A Thousand Suns is in stores on September 14th. Here’s hoping it’s not a bad investment.

They’ve actually always been ProTools heavy, it’s just that they went a little (okay a lot) more electronic this time around. I actually like the song, but I can see where people who expected more Hybrid Theory/Meteora would think this new stuff sucks

The song is growing on me. Still wish they’d go back to music similar to the first two albums

Not exactly a power ballad. Celine Dion makes power ballads.

Sounds pretty awesome. I’ll like to look into that. (Move on people, we have the first two albums already. No need for more of the same thing.)

Remember that this song had a fan remix the song or whatever. Maybe this is the remixed version.

When it was just him singing at the start I was like, “Sami was wrong, this is fine…” then it happened. Omg I just wanted to kill my speakers, that’s utterly terrible. It’s a real pity since the lyrics could have probably fit an average LP song.

I think the song is great, oh and this is still not the full song…
