R.E.M. recording “old school” album

According to Posies frontman Ken Stringfellow, R.E.M. are recording an “old school” album. Won’t you elaborate for us, Mr. Stringfellow?
In an interview with NME, Stringfellow said he met up bassist Mike Mills in Paris where he got to check out some recordings of the band’s new album. He said that “it’s sounding really great, very old school” and even gave an example as to what he meant.
While listening to one song, he said it had “vocals which were mixed super low which I couldn’t understand and I was like, ‘Yes, a return to form.’ Mike was on about pushing the vocals up and I was like, ‘No, don’t do it.’”
He added that the album has “electric and acoustic guitar coming along like The Byrds,” and that “there’s some piano songs too, but I didn’t hear a lot of crazy, freaky keyboards and vintage drum machines in there like the period when I was with them.” Stringfellow has toured in the past with R.E.M.
To sum it all up, Stringfellow said “It’s really quite beautiful, some of the recordings were a little bit dark and had just the kind of murk that you would hear on an old R.E.M. record. I thought that was a great thing to bring back.” The album, which was produced by Jacknife Lee, is expected to come out next year.
