Dream Theater responds to Portnoy’s departure

If you haven’t been paying attention since around 8:00 p.m. last night, Mike Portnoy announced that he was going to stop playing drums for his band of 25 years, Dream Theater. He released a statement saying that he needed a break after 20 years of nonstop recording and touring and that he needed a break. He also said that the band will continue to work without him. Now, according to Blabbermouth, Dream Theater have released their own statement on Portnoy’s departure.

The band says that, while they’ll miss Portnoy behind the drum kit, they will “continue to move forward with the same intensity — and in the same musical tradition — that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us.” They also plan on “recording our newest album in January 2011, and we’ll follow that with a full-on world tour.”

As for Portnoy, fans have already been blaming Avenged Sevenfold for the split. Portnoy has been on tour with A7X during the Rockstar Uproar tour and recorded drum parts for their new album, Nightmare, after their drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan died last December. Portnoy recently posted online that they “are not responsible for my decision” and that “they are just as shocked as you guys” about the decision.
