John Lennon’s killer denied parole again

Mark David Chapman, the man who shot and killed John Lennon in New York City in 1980, has been denied parole after appearing in front of the parole board for the sixth time.

Chapman, 55, shot Lennon four times outside the his apartment building in front of his wife, Yoko Ono. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was given 20 years to life in prison. He was first eligible for parole in 2000. He was scheduled to appear last month before a parole board but it was postponed until recently.

The Associated Press reports that the board wrote in their statement that they denied Chapman parole because they were concerned about “the disregard you displayed for the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life when, after careful planning, you travelled to New York for the sole purpose of killing John Lennon.” They concluded that “release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community.” He’ll be up for parole again in 2012.

Ono was a vocal opponent of Chapman gaining his freedom, saying that she feared for her life as well as for the lives of Lennon’s sons, Sean and Julian. Lennon would have turned 70 this year on October 9th.

he actually thinks he should get out… this man destroyed one of the worlds greatest musicians and deserves prison. I’m not saying we should kill him, but at least don’t set him free just yet. Believe it or not, im a big supporter of second chances, but this man should not get one until he feels serious remorse for what he did.
