We like rock music more than you. It's just the way it is…

There was a pro and a con to my watching this years VMA’s. The pro was that I actually got paid to watch them. The con was that I had to watch every second of the shambles of an award show that MTV presented.

But, being the rock music writer that I am, it is my duty, as much as it pains me, to report on the rock music happenings at this years ceremony. Luckily there wasn’t much on the rock front so this will be relatively short.

30 Seconds To Mars took home Best Rock Video for “Kings And Queens” while Muse took Best Special Effects for “Uprising” and Florence + The Machine (who put on one of the best performances of the night) took the award for Best Art Direction for “Dog Days Are Over.”

On the performance front, we had to sit through Linkin Park play their awful new single, “The Catalyst.” Granted, they played the song at the Griffith Observatory which had some of the best scenery but was muddled by the sub-par techno music blasting from the band. I was hoping someone would pull a Kanye West and interrupt their set just so we could move on. The always lovely Hayley Williams performed “Airplanes” with rapper B.o.B and then segued her duet into a short performance of “Only Exception” with Paramore.

For me personally, I thought the best parts of the show were Deadmau5 DJing, Kanye West’s performance of the new song, “Runaway,” and seeing J-Woww in a bikini. Other than that…yeah, you couldn’t ask me to watch another VMA ceremony even if you paid me. Well, ok, MAYBE if you paid me then I might…but I still won’t like it.
