New R.E.M. album to feature collabs with Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith

Well, the new R.E.M. album just got a lot cooler…as if that was even possible.

A Spin magazine interview with multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills has revealed that the band got some special guests to appear on Collapse Into Now including Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith and Peaches. Smith sings on two songs, “All The Best” and “Blue,” while Vedder brings his trademark voice to the song “It Happened Today.” Peaches takes lead vocal duties on a song that has no name but Mills reveals that the word “alligator” will be used.

As to what R.E.M.’s 15th studio album will sound like, Mills says that “we wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice, mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers.” He adds that the lyrics on the album are “very personal. Not only to [singer] Michael [Stipe], but personal and human in the sense of the narrative of the songs, the protagonists of the songs.”

Collapse Into Now is expected to be released in early 2011.
