Are Gorillaz calling it quits?

Even though they’re still on tour, releasing new Christmas gifts every day at their website and may possibly release a new album before Christmas, are Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett ready to say bye-bye to Gorillaz?

Speaking to Australia’s The Age, Albarn said that, even though the tour has been an “unqualified success” he’s not sure how to sustain the massive size of the tour they’ve embarked on. “I couldn’t keep going at this size and pace,” says Albarn. Hewlett also comments that “this would be a wonderful point to leave Gorillaz; at the end of this tour, I think.”

But Hewlett added that “if that were the case…Gorillaz is more like a big sprawling gang of people you could do any number of projects with.” He concluded his thought by saying “this tour, with these people, is a one-off. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We’ll never repeat this.”

Gorillaz have released a new single, “Doncamatic (All Played Out),” and are hopefully releasing that new album before December 25th. I’m just praying that, while Albarn may not want to keep doing shows of this size, he’ll continue making music as Gorillaz. Plastic Beach was one of the best albums of the year and, even though that would be a high note to end on, I’m hoping that Gorillaz continue to expand their musical palette and keep giving us amazing songs to rave about.
