Green Day’s American Idiot to become a movie?

Green Day’s 2004 album, American Idiot, has gone from CD and vinyl to Broadway and may now make a jump to the silver screen.

Speaking to The New York Times, Billie Joe Armstrong said the band are “definitely in talks” to make a film out of the album. “There are people who have the ability to make it happen, who have expressed genuine interest in it,” Armstrong said. “And we want to do it, so I think it could happen.”

Meanwhile, the Broadway musical American Idiot is still going strong especially since Armstrong is currently performing in the show as the character St. Jimmy. But with all the work Armstrong has done with the musical, it’s influencing him to write a new, original show with Idiot director Michael Mayer.

Armstrong said, “I think I’d be interested in the future of really getting into writing specifically for a show, that’s something I’d really love to do.” He added, “The kind of music that I like is very immediate and very catchy, and you identify with it quickly, and I try to write that way. And in musical theater it’s the same thing: you identify with the songs immediately, the good ones anyway.”

Armstrong will perform on Broadway until February 27th. Then Green Day kicks it into high gear as their new live album, Awesome As Fuck, will be released on March 15th.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Stories about an Idiot movie have come and gone a bunch of times in the last few years. Frankly, I’m way more interested in an original musical from Armstrong than I am a film of American Idiot.

I’m v. excited about this. Just wanted to point out that, according to SPIN, it was Mayer who said “we’re definitely in talks.” and “There are people who have the ability to make it happen..” etc. Link here: http://www.spin.com/articles/green-day-turning-american-idiot-movie
