What is Metallica recording next?

So now that Metallica recently finished an insanely long tour in support of Death Magnetic and also found some time to play shows with the Big Four of Thrash, now would be the time for them to take a bit of a break.
Well according to an interview with Rolling Stone, Kirk Hammett has said that the band will head into the recording studio in May. So, clearly, they’re gonna start working on the new Metallica album, right? “I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It’s a recording project, let’s put it that way.”
Pardon? OK, so it’s…not a Metallica album? Could you elaborate, Kirk? “Without getting too deep into it, it’s more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen.”
Ummm….so wait it’s not a….but at the same time…toasters and pigeons…I’m perplexed. Well at least we do know that Metallica is hitting the stage on April 23rd in Indio, CA for the first and only U.S. Big Four show. I’m pretty sure that’ll be a lot more direct and to the point.

It’s either some sort of score, or more covers.
