Deftones frontman talks new side project, Crosses

Looks like Deftones frontman, Chino Moreno, isn’t only thinking about his band’s upcoming tour with Dillinger Escape Plan but also about a new side project that’s tentatively called Crosses.
Moreno recently spoke to Noisecreep and revealed that he’s been working with Shaun Lopez, guitarist of Far. Moreno says, “we’ve been recording this real minimal project where it’s just me and him and another buddy of mine, Scott Chuck, and we’re just writing these little pieces of music, whether it starts with piano or some down tempo beats.” He adds that the music is, “really minimal and soothing and it’s sort of like the stuff I like listening to when I’m not screaming my head off.”
The singer said that 16 tracks are currently finished and that they might “release a series of EPs on our own on the Net.” But he’s trying to keep Crosses under wraps for the most part because he feels too much hype will ruin the project. “Our idea for this is to just put it out there and whoever likes it, cool. We just want to make music because we like to do it, just doing it ourselves and utilizing the Internet.”
This isn’t Moreno’s first foray with a side project. He was also in another project, Team Sleep, which released a self-titled, debut album in 2005. But a huge buzz around the band is what Moreno believes stopped any potential progress with that group. “It was supposed to be this underground thing that would happen whenever, and it developed so much hype around it that it kind of ruined the whole thing for me.” Moreno has said he’s reached out to Team Sleep guitarist, Todd Wilkinson, and they’re hoping to “record music when we can and not have it be such a structured thing where you have to meet deadlines and tour.”
Meanwhile, Deftones are releasing an album on Record Store Day called Covers which consists of…cover songs, obviously. Also, their upcoming North American tour kicks off April 14th in Seattle, WA. All the dates can be found at their website.
