TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith dies from lung cancer

Sorry to be a buzzkill on this 4/20, guys, but we got some sad news. Gerard Smith, bassist for TV on the Radio, died this morning from complications caused by lung cancer. He was 34 years old.

The band posted a statement at their website which reads the following:

We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.

The band has canceled its upcoming five shows including tonight’s in Detroit. It sucks knowing that the band just released Nine Types of Light just last week and it’s a damn good listen too. Shame he won’t be around to see all the fans jamming out to the new songs live. But he’ll be missed by many. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and bandmates. R.I.P. Gerard. Thanks for the music.
