Watch: Incubus – “Adolescents”
Incubus are making their return not with a bang but with a well thought out whisper. Their album, If Not Now, When?, is in stores on July 12th and the album’s first single, “Adolescents,” is now up top for your viewing pleasure. It’s a simple premise: it’s a black and white performance video featuring the band playing the song amidst some lights in the background. Simple. Just how Incubus are trying to portray themselves with this new album. No heavy rock riffs, no distortion. Just different but simple. I like it. Hopefully you do too.

I have listened to this song about 20 times now trying to give it a chance. I just cant get into it. To be honest, there was a time when I considered Incubus my favorite band. However, with the past 2 albums that they have come out with, it seems that they have been reaching to come up with something different and coming up very short. I believe that it would be in their best interest to revisit their roots a little bit and remember where they came from. Their lyrics are still very deep and intellectual but some of the vocal phrasing just does not work and does not seem natural (almost like they’re trying too hard). If you were to put a song like “Pardon Me,” “New Skin,” or, hell, even “Nice to Know You” next to any one of the songs from the past 2 1/2 albums they have come out with, it would be annihilated. I cant stress enough that I am still an Incubus fan. I will continue to give a listen to any and every release that they put out. But is it too much to ask for a little taste of Science or Make Yourself (I wont be greedy and ask for Fungus Amongus)?
