Billie Joe Armstrong starring in American Idiot movie



He made heads turn in the stage version of American Idiotand breathed new life into the Broadway version. Now, he’ll be taking his thespian skills to the big screen in 2013.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is headed for the movies where he’ll reprise his Broadway role of St. Jimmy for the upcoming American Idiot movie, which is being produced by Tom Hanks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Mayer, the man who directed the stage version, has been tapped to direct the movie as well.

Now I’m not doubting that Green Day fans won’t come out in droves to catch the movie (tons of them did when Billie Joe was on Broadway and the musical made most of its money when he was on stage). But the whole movie-musical genre isn’t exactly a strong one. It’s already had its peak a few years back and now, every so often, one comes along and does….okay at best. So will American Idiot have something different that will set it apart from the rest of the showtunes on celluloid? We’ll have to wait until 2013.
