Listen: Damon Albarn – “Apple Carts”
So let’s see. Damon Albarn pretty much conquered the world with Gorillaz in 2010? Check. He’s making all of us wait with severe anticipation in hopes of something new from Blur? Check. He’s written an opera? Check. And next up on Albarn’s list is a new opera that he’s written and will star in called Dr. Dee. What exactly is it that this man does NOT do?
While Albarn’s last opera, Monkey: Journey to the West, was an adaptation of a Chinese opera, this new venture was created entirely by the Gorillaz frontman about 16th century astrologer and spy, John Dee. The opera is set to run from July 1-9 at the Manchester International Festival and will take part in London’s Cultural Olympiad and be staged at the home of the English National Opera (via CoS).

I have to admit I was mislead by the term “opera”. Basically means like a musical right? With a heavy story? I thought it constituted high-pitched women belting out Italian ballads.
