Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley to play Jeff Buckley in new movie

When the movie about Jeff Buckley hits the silver screen, you will see that Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley is the man portraying the tragic singer/songwriter.
But, according to IndieWire, this is no biopic. The movie is called Greetings From Tim Buckley and is being marketed as a father-son drama. Here’s the quick description of the film:
Greetings from Tim Buckley follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.
So basically it’s the lead up to Jeff Buckley’s career but not his actual career where he became a star. But all of the music in the film has been cleared by Buckley’s estate so you’ll be hearing some legitimate tunes in this film and not cover versions of Buckley’s songs. As for Badgley, he’s pleased as punch to have the role. He said in a statement, “To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologized as a human being… It’s something very special and sacred. I’m going to give all I can to this project.”
Now I’m not going to bash this casting choice especially since I’ve never watched an episode of Gossip Girl so I have no clue what this kid’s acting chops are like. So I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until I start seeing trailers. That’s when I start passing judgment. But since he was in Gossip Girl, is he the guy that got to be with Blake Lively or Leighton Meester? Because, either way, he deserves a round of applause for that. Well done, Badgley. Well done.
