The Doors collaborate with Skrillex for upcoming documentary
“I like to say this is the first new Doors track of the 21st century.” – Ray Manzarek. I beg your pardon?
Listen, I know that artists these days are trying to do whatever it takes to keep their music fresh for younger listeners even if that means completely changing their sound. Also, Ray Manzarek is a bit of a crazy bastard. But the statement made by the former Doors keyboardist to Rolling Stone regarding a forthcoming song done with dubstep producer Skrillex will definitely have people scratching their heads for a while.
Up top, you can check out a trailer for director Amir Bar Lev’s forthcoming documentary, RE:GENERATION which shows clips of Skrillex aka Sonny Moore and the remaining members of the Doors in the studio. Bar Lev, who has also directed documentaries including The Pat Tillman Story, brought five DJ’s together and paired them with artists from different genres to create new sounds. The Crystal Method team up with R&B artist Martha Reeves; Pretty Lights works on a country song with LeAnn Rimes and Ralph Stanley; DJ Premier works with Nas and the Berklee School of Music Orchestra; and Mark Ronson works on a song with Erykah Badu, members of the Dap Kings and Trombone Shorty on a jazz tune.
Regarding Skrillex and the Doors, Manzarek praised the producer saying, “[Sonny] plays his beat, all he had to do was play the one thing. I listened to it and I said, ‘Holy shit, that’s strong.’” Regarding the track itself, the keyboardist says, “Basically, it’s a variation on ‘Milestones,’ by Miles Davis, and if I do say so myself, sounds fucking great, hot as hell.”
Scary thought but we’ll see what happens when the film premieres during Grammy week in 2012.
