Jack White releases brand new song via balloon
You know the phrase “Think outside the box”? Well it seems Jack White has left the box behind entirely and is aiming for “Think outside the atmosphere.”
April 1st may have been April Fools Day but to White it was a day to release a brand new song in a completely new way. He and his cohorts at Third Man Records decided to release 1,000 copies of an unreleased Jack White track called “Freedom At 21″ via helium balloon. Allow the Third Man Records website to explain:
Envisioned as an experiment exploring non-traditional forms of record distribution and a way to get records in the hands of people who don’t visit record shops, the label was sure to use biodegradable latex balloons and all-natural twine in the process.
Accompanying the balloons were custom postcards with instructions for the finders to submit photos, discovery location and the date on which the record was found, all of which will be viewable at ThirdManRecords.com/balloon.
The website also adds that even though 1,000 copies were released “Statistics for similar balloon launches show a recovery rate of approximately 10% so it’s quite possible that less than 100 of the 1000 records launched will ever be discovered.” Plus, the label doesn’t plan on releasing this song in any other format. Which means if you live near Nashville, TN and feel like getting a hold of a copy of “Freedom At 21″ it’s time for you to take a road trip.
White’s new album, Blunderbuss, is out on April 21st.
