RiO! Band of the Month – Broken End Stereo

It’s Halloween and on this day, your trick or treat is our new RiO! Band of the Month for October. They hail from Tuscon, AZ and they’re called Broken End Stereo.

At first listen, this five-piece band sounds like any other band that would be fully supported by the Hot Topic crowds. But these boys manage to bring catchy hooks to rock music that could have an easy crossover appeal to pop listeners as well. Their EP, Viva Love Viva Hope, is available through their Myspace page for a mere $10. But head over there first just to check out some of their music, pics and more.

Broken End Stereo are our final band of the month for 2010. In December, all of the 2010 band of the month winners will do battle to find out which of them is our RiO! Local Band of the Year. It’s gonna be a fun time.

RiO! Band of the Month – American Fangs

We had three great bands all competing for the prestigiousness that comes with being the RiO! Band of the Month for September. In the end, however, only one could lay claim to that most lofty title and they are American Fangs from Houston, TX.

Trashy, garage-rock is the name of their game with their song, “Le Kick,” leading the way. Screaming vocals, a rousing chorus and super-distorted guitar lines can easily allow you to visualize the mosh pit taking place in a basement with stone walls with that one pole in the middle of the room holding the entire place up. Loud, raw, unapologetic and, above all, to the point: it sums up the song and American Fangs.

RiO! Band of the Month – Rise To Remain

The votes were tallied and at the end of it all, the month of August belonged to British metal band Rise To Remain. Bruce Dickinson should be so proud.

Why should the singer of Iron Maiden have a smile on his face? Maybe because his son, Austin, is the lead singer of this kick-ass band. Looks like music runs deep in this family. While Rise To Remain may not sound like Maiden, this band has already garnered up a ton of accolades ever since forming in 2007. Their first gig was at a Download Festival, they’ve won awards including “Best New Band” at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards and they haven’t even released a debut album yet!

RiO! Band of the Month – Wild Tiger

After a close vote between very different types of bands, the month of July belongs to the sound of the 80′s and Wild Tiger who are our band of the month on the RiO!B.

The band, which was formed in 2005, is one that brings the music of two decades ago back to life. With influences ranging from Queen to Def Leppard, this band provides the soundtrack to what you listened to back when your hair was long, your pants were tight and Axl Rose wasn’t completely psycho yet.

RiO! Band of the Month – Greek Fire

With the month of June kicking off an already great summer, we were hoping that the band of the month would be equally as cool as the season. I believe we have found that band in Greek Fire.

What originally started off as a side project of two members of the band Story of the Year, Greek Fire is now a full-fledged band ready to take over the rock world. With driving, aggressive songs that are already set for radio play, GF should be one of those bands that sells out venues as a headliner in no time. They may have two guys from an already successful band in their ranks but they’re working as if no one has ever heard of them before.

RiO! Band of the Month – Electric Mary

You’ve seen these guys before when they won our Band of the Week contest but the people decided they wanted more of them. Which is why Australia’s Electric Mary is our Band of the Month for May!

This Melbourne based band are ripping it up down under with their brand of classic rock for the modern rock age. These guys take elements of some of your favorite classic rockers and tweak them a bit to bring us a sound that needs to be cranked up as high as it can go.

Plus, these guys are going global. They’re playing a show in South Africa with Fatboy Slim to celebrate the Fifa World Cup and then will make their way to France to play Hellfest with Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister. RiO! Band of the Month – The Muggs

The month of April was a month where you guys wanted 70′s blues-rock turned up to 11. Congratulations are in order for the new Rock it Out! Blog band of the month: The Muggs!

This Detroit based band brought their old-school influences and sounds to the 21st century and refuse to move forward in time. With songs like “Slow Curve” and “Get It On”, listening to this band will get your mom to think you’re “smoking drugs” while your dad will want you to pass it to the left and tell you about the time he saw Deep Purple live.

RiO! Band of the Month – A Lot Like Birds

The votes were tallied for our Band of the Month contest and the winning band ran away with the victory. Our RiO! Band of the Month for the month of March is the prog-rock band from Sacramento, CA: A Lot Like Birds.

This seven piece group, complete with, what seems to be, an infinite amount of instruments, released their debut album, Plan B, in late 2009. Not only do the songs lean towards the description of epic, but the album titles also mess with your head. Names include “Sesame Street Is No Place For Romance” and “Hallows Or Horcruxes” which, through deductive reasoning, shows that A Lot Like Birds love to take things children enjoy and sonically warp them…or just make them that much better.

RiO! Band of the Month: February – Buster Blue

Of all the bands that were a part of our band battles in the month of february, this is the one band I honestly didn’t expect to win Band of the Month. Not because the music was bad but because my audience tends to lean a bit more towards the harder stuff (music not drugs…I think). But here they are. Kings of the hill and our RiO! Band of the Month for February: Buster Blue.

Hailing from the biggest little city in the world, Reno, NV, this band manages to combine an amalgamation of music and turn it into something unique, danceable and enjoyable. It’s western folk music combined with elements of swing and ska. If you’re interest has been piqued then make your way to their Myspace page for their songs, pics and more.

Congratulations going out to Buster Blue for daring to be a bit different and making it work.

RiO!B Band of the Month – This Nightmare Ends At Sunrise

The Rock it Out! Blog is proud to announce the winner of our very first battle for the title of Band Of The Month goes to California’s very own This Nightmare Ends At Sunrise.

This metal band came out on top with the most votes and has the distinction of telling everyone they know that they are the band of the month on the RiO!B.

Recently, however, the band suffered a tragic loss. Their guitarist, Kenny Yates, recently passed away and we would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Kenny’s family, friends and band mates. The group is currently on break as they try to restructure their line up. Hopefully they continue to rock out in Kenny’s name.

What you should do is head over to their Myspace page and drown yourself in the hardcore sounds that this band has to offer. It’s sure not to disappoint fans of the genre. Congratulations to This Nightmare Ends At Sunrise!
