Watch: Trailer for Dave Grohl’s documentary, Sound City

Dave Grohl has got some of the coolest friends in the world. How do I know? Because they’re all in his new documentary.

Down below is the trailer for a doc called Sound City which was directed by the Foo Fighters frontman and focuses on Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, CA. The studio was shut down in 2011 but not before some of the biggest names in rock recorded some legendary albums including Nirvana’s Nevermind.

Grohl said of the studio, “That place was like a church. The list of people that recorded there is like a virtual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That funky old place had the best drum room in the world. The drum sound at the beginning of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit?’ That’s Sound City. I decided to make a film about that feeling when you put five guys in a room, hit ‘record’ and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. Expect some epic jam sessions.”

So who are some of Grohl’s friends in this film? Try Trent Reznor, Joshua Homme, Mick Fleetwood, Tom Petty, Lars Ulrich, Krist Novoselic, Alain Johannes, Cheap Trick, Corey Taylor, Butch Vig, Vinnie Appice, Barry Manilow, Frank Black, Taylor Hawkins and a whole lot more.

There’s no release date set for the film yet but you should put this on your “I’m fucking seeing this when it comes out” list.

Review: Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth

On today’s Rock it Out! Blog episode, I review the new album from Van Halen, A Different Kind Of Truth.

The best way to describe this album is to compare it to an American muscle car. It’s strong, fast, nice to look at and rides like a demon. It’s a great comeback album from a band we haven’t heard from in 14 years.

The new single from Bruce Springsteen, “We Take Care Of Our Own,” is still a track that I’m not a fan of. The Boss’s way of phrasing the lyrics just throws me off a bit. Yes I know that sounds a bit snobby but I’m someone that pays attention to stuff like that…so there.

In any case, Springsteen has released a music video for the track which you can check out down below. The Boss plays his guitar in a black and white world while celebrating the hard working people of the U.S.A and showing off scenes of the country in a well shot video. I may not be a fan of this track but it’s a lovely video to watch. On top of that, the lyrics pop up on the screen as Springsteen sings them so if you’d like to sing along, feel free.

Shinedown, Korn headlining Carolina Rebellion festival

The Carolina Rebellion, the hard rock festival that takes place in North Carolina, is back once again boasting yet another line up for you to rock out to.

Shinedown and Korn are headlining this year’s installment, which will take place on May 5th at the Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham, NC. Other artists performing include Five Finger Death Punch, Evanescence, Staind, Slash, Chevelle, Halestorm, Adelitas Way, Volbeat, Paper Tongues and more.

Tickets go on sale starting February 17th at 10am EST at the festival’s website or at Ticketmaster. A pre-sale will be held starting Wednesday, February 15th and you can gain access to it by heading to the festival’s site to sign up for their newsletter.

Gorillaz are coming back in a big way in 2012. The band announced, via the Twitter feed of Murdoc Niccals, that they would be teaming up with Andre 3000 of Outkast and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem for a brand new track called “Do Ya Thing.” The song will be released on February 23rd over at Converse’s website. The song will be released for the show company’s “Three Artists. One Song” series.

Consequence of Sound adds that in addition to the song, a 12-minute explicit version will be released at a later date. Also, lead Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett has created a music video featuring a baboon in a karate outfit and a “masked topless bloke.”

Oh yeah! Besides the new song, Gorillaz are releasing their own show for Converse as well. Check it out.

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng showing signs of improvement

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who was involved in a car accident in November of 2008 that left him in a vegetative state, is continuing to show signs of improvement and has even awoken from a semi-comatose state. Down below, you can check out a video of Cheng being able to raise his leg on command. It’s a hopeful sign but he’s not out of the woods yet. He still can’t communicate verbally but can open his eyes from time to time and see and hear things around him.

Cheng is currently in a facility in New Jersey seeking treatment but the rising costs are becoming a burden on his family. The treatment will cost $250,000 and his family only has around $17,000. Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 performing at the Grammys together

You guys know the Foo Fighters’ single, “Rope,” was remixed by Deadmau5, right? Well it looks like we’re going to see that remix done live at the Grammy awards this year.

Dave Grohl and the Foos will perform alongside the Mau5 as well as David Guetta and Lil’ Wayne in a tribute to electronic music during the ceremony which takes place on CBS on Sunday, February 12. The performance will take place outside of the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

I’m not really a big fan of the remix, which you can check out down below, but it’ll be interesting to combine the Foo Fighters live with an electronic pulse and Deadmau5′s light show behind them. Plus, the Foos are nominated for a Grammy for the remix so you know I’m pulling for them.
