Gorillaz announce collaboration with Andre 3000 and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem

Gorillaz are coming back in a big way in 2012. The band announced, via the Twitter feed of Murdoc Niccals, that they would be teaming up with Andre 3000 of Outkast and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem for a brand new track called “Do Ya Thing.” The song will be released on February 23rd over at Converse’s website. The song will be released for the show company’s “Three Artists. One Song” series.

Consequence of Sound adds that in addition to the song, a 12-minute explicit version will be released at a later date. Also, lead Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett has created a music video featuring a baboon in a karate outfit and a “masked topless bloke.”

Oh yeah! Besides the new song, Gorillaz are releasing their own show for Converse as well. Check it out.

Normally when a band releases a special edition shoe from Converse, I stay away from them. I mean I love me some Chuck Taylors but the ones released by bands are always tacky looking and splash the band logo all over the shoe. I’m not a fan of that…but these I could see being laced up on my feet.

Gorillaz are releasing their brand of Chuck Taylors with Converse and they look pretty damn good. They were designed by Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett and they’ll be available to purchase this coming February. In addition to working with Converse, Gorillaz will also take part in the latest installment of the company’s “Three Artists, One Song” collaboration. The last one was done with Andrew W.K., Matt and Kim and Soulja Boy.

So we get shoes from Gorillaz AND a new song? I knew there was a reason I liked this band so much.

Gorillaz releasing singles compilation in November

If you’ve been following Murdoc Niccals of Gorillaz on Twitter, you’ll notice he’s been tweeting some interesting messages like “Gorillaz are TEN years old this year! Us and Girls Aloud! So let’s take a look at our best bits! All the singles! On one album. Mmmm…nice. X.”

But now it’s been confirmed, via Consequence of Sound, that an album featuring the band’s singles over the past 10 years will be released on November 28th. Dubbed The Singles Collection: 2001-2011, a total of 15 tracks including “Clint Eastwood,” “DARE,” “Stylo” and more pepper this compilation. The full tracklisting can be seen down below.

The album will be released on CD, as a two-disc CD/DVD combo and as a double vinyl.

Were you a fan of Snoop Dogg’s appearance on “Welcome To The World of the Plastic Beach” from the Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach? Perhaps you’ll appreciate this.

Head over to Some Kind Of Awesome to check out a brand new collab track between tha Doggfather and the animated primates called “Sumthin Like This Night.” This time, it’s S-N-double O-P taking the lead as the Gorillaz provide a beat that seems to be heavily electro-funk/weed influenced.

The track comes from a brand new Snoop Dogg album, Doggumentary, which is in stores on March 29th.

Boom! Foo Fighters and Gorillaz are getting into the Record Store Day mix and are releasing some material for you to pick up from your indie record store on April 16th.

Gorillaz aren’t releasing anything new but they are releasing their “iPad” album, The Fall, which was originally released on Christmas Day, on vinyl. If, for some reason, you’re not down with vinyl, the album will be released on CD and as a digital download on April 19th.

As for them Foos, they’ll be releasing a limited edition covers album on vinyl called Medium Rare. Furthermore, the White Limo from the infamous “White Limo” video will be appearing at indie record stores all across the country to promote their forthcoming album, Wasting Light, which is in stores on April 12th.

Report: Gorillaz have split up?

First of all, let me preface this story by saying the report of this alleged “split” comes from the British tabloid, People (via CoS), which, if you look at the article, doesn’t even spell the name of the band properly. So take this story for what it’s worth.

The British rag reports that the “Gorrillaz” have split up. The story reads that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the co-founders of the group, had a “massive argument that has basically ended things” according to “an insider.” Furthermore, the article says that Albarn “was less than impressed with Jamie’s party lifestyle” and Hewlett “became frustrated at how much time Damon was giving to his many other projects.”

While there’s still no official confirmation from the band on this, it shouldn’t come as that much of a shock. When Gorillaz played in New Zealand last year, Albarn said on stage that it would be the last time anyone would see this group again. So if this news is true, then it does suck considering we’ve already lost the White Stripes and will lose LCD Soundsystem in April. And here I thought 2011 was going to be a happy year.
