Sad news, GWAR fans. Dave Brockie, frontman of GWAR, recently released a statement to the website, MetalSucks regarding guitarist Cory Smoot:

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

Smoot aka Flattus Maximus joined the band in 2002 and was the person who portrayed that character for the longest time in GWAR. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Smoot’s family, friends and bandmates.

GWAR hold a special place in the history of the RiO!B as my interview with Oderus Urungus may very well have been the best/most bizarre interview I’ve ever done and would happily do again.

That being said, I’m proud to report that the aliens of metal are releasing a new album this November called Bloody Pit Of Horror (via CoS). It’s in stores on November 9th and it’s also their 12th studio album.

Urungus best explains what this album will consist of so I’ll just let his description be your guide. He says that “Our new album has got some of the heaviest shit we have ever played, and our show is packed with brand-new, never-seen-before acts of violence, bestiality, and political in-correctness. I don’t want to spoil anything…wait, yes I do! We are chopping Sarah Palin’s tits off and feeding them to Gor-Gor, if he will have them!” Sign me up!

Their upcoming tour also kicks off on October 2nd in Baltimore and ends on December 19th in Brisbane, Australia. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster.com.

Please go to GWAR’s Myspace page and check out their music. Be sure to also go to your record store and pick up a copy of the brand new album Lust in Space. Do it now or they may find you and strip you of your skin.

I’m heading to Montclair, NJ in a bit to interview the Intergalactic Master of Metal himself. Of course I’m referring to Oderus Urungus of the band GWAR.

So for your homework, you must watch their new music video for their song “Let Us Slay” from their new album Lust in Space which is in stores. It encompasses all the elements that you love about GWAR. Loud music? Check. Insane lyrics? Check. Beefcake the Mighty? Double check.

The interview with Oderus will be up on the blog tomorrow and I can only imagine the insanity that will go down during our talk. In the meantime, head over to GWAR’s Myspace page. Check out more of their music and all their tour dates as they’re currently on the road with Lamb of God and Job For A Cowboy. I’m definitely planning on wearing my white t-shirt for tonight’s show.
