Watch: Highlights from night 2 of PJ20 festival

It happened again! Another night of celebration as Pearl Jam gathered the teeming masses to Alpine Valley theater in Wisconsin for the second night of their 20th anniversary bash. Like the first night, there was another reunion of Temple of the Dog as well as a bunch of collaborations for the diehard PJ fans to take in.

Down below, you can see video of Temple performing “Call Me A Dog,” PJ frontman Eddie Vedder hitting the stage with Queens of the Stone Age rocking a cowbell on “Little Sister,” QOTSA frontman Josh Homme appearing on stage with The Strokes during their track, “New York City Cops,” and a brand new song performed solo by Vedder (via CoS.)

This weekend isn’t just Labor Day weekend but it’s also the weekend we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s existence. The band is doing so by holding their own festival at the Alpine Valley theater in East Troy, Wisconsin. Night one took place on Saturday night and it was a buffet of goodness for all the diehard PJ fans that made the trip to help the band celebrate. Up top, you can check out a Temple of the Dog reunion that took place as Chris Cornell hit the stage to perform “Hunger Strike” alongside Eddie Vedder.

Down below is more video featuring Temple of the Dog and a tribute to Mother Love Bone. Cornell, along with PJ’s Stone Goddard and Jeff Ament, Greg Gilmore and Bruce Fairweather performed the song “Stardog Champion” to honor the memory of Andrew Wood. You’ve also got video of Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme performing “In The Moonlight” together and video of Julian Casablancas of The Strokes jumping on stage to perform “Not For You.” Also, there’s footage of Vedder jumping on stage with The Strokes to perform “Juicebox.”

Sometimes compilation albums are just a bore. A bunch of artists are grouped together on an album for a cause but none of the music is new or fresh. This, on the other hand, is the opposite of those first two sentences.

Antiquiet has got itself a track featuring Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Julian Casablancas and Fabrizio Moretti from The Strokes. This quartet covers the classic Marvin Gaye song, “Mercy Mercy Me,” and is only one of the many tracks that appears on the three-disc compilation, Live From Nowhere Near You, Vol. II. Proceeds from the album will benefit Outside In, a non-profit based out of Portland, OR that provides aid and counseling to homeless youth.

The compilation is available now through Greyday Records for $15 through their website. If you head to the label’s website, you’ll also get the full story behind how the comp was made and who else appears on it.

You see all those names on that album cover? That would make for one hell of a festival, wouldn’t it? Well this is the closest you’ll get to this collection of musicians all at once and that’s by streaming the forthcoming album, Rave on Buddy Holly, over at NPR’s website.

The Black Keys, Paul McCartney, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, Karen Elson, Julian Casablancas, Patti Smith Lou Reed and more pay tribute to Holly on this album by bringing some of his classic hits back with their own twist. It’s in stores on June 28th but get your first listen over at NPR.

Tons of artists including Paul McCartney, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Florence + The Machine, Patti Smith, Julian Casablancas and more appear on the album and cover songs from Holly’s catalog. The Strokes finish recording their new album

Every time we’ve heard about The Strokes and their new album it was always getting its release date pushed back a few months. We first heard it would be out in September of 2010 then frontman Julian Casablancas pushed it to the end of the year and then right into some random point in 2011. But last night, courtesy of one of his tweets, we had a confirmed fact about the album. “Still not going to be out for a few months-mixing, etc, but JUST finally finished it yesterday actually!?”

So all of those news interviews that had a lot of us frustrated because sometimes they were signaling the possible end of the band and Casablancas drops the news in a tweet?! You shifty, beautiful, hipster bastard.

However, we still have no release date yet but i’m going to guesstimate that it’ll be out right around the end of April/beginning of May. It’s the perfect time to release an album right before hitting all the major festivals AND increases the chances of getting on all the blogs’ “Top summer albums of 2011″ lists. Because that’s such a huuuuge honor, right?

The Strokes’ new album out in January?

Julian Casablancas has decided to fuck with us yet again.

In a recent interview with Clash Music, the Strokes frontman/solo artist revealed the release date for the upcoming Strokes album.

“I think January. I was told not to predict anymore. But I’m pretty sure it should be out in January,” said Casablancas.

The first prediction was that the LP was coming out this September which made sense considering the Strokes are playing a few festivals this summer including a headlining slot at Lollapalooza. So to play that show, debut new material and then have the new album come out would have made for the perfect scenario.

But no! The hipster godfathers have decided to make us wait a bit longer. However, Casablancas did point out that the band is putting quite a bit of effort into this record.

“I think we’re getting a lot more from all the band members. The last record was like a half-assed attempt at that,” he said. “I think hopefully this new record is more in the direction of everyone being equal, but it’s not so half-assed. Everyone brought songs and then allowed me to kinda mutilate and edit as musical director or whatever, and everyone just kinda trusts each other, you know?”

Hopefully, with Casablancas as “musical director”, we get ourselves a fantastic album…which might be out in January 2011.

There’s excitement in the air over the fact that The Strokes are currently recording their new album and possibly releasing it this September. But apparently there’s one Stroke missing from those recording sessions and that’s frontman Julian Casablancas.

The singer revealed that he’s been away from the studio while the rest of the band has been laying down tracks. He plans on adding vocals at a later date.

“I think they [the other band members] did a good job,” said Casablancas to ABC News. “Just tracking the songs. It’s been nice to get my hands on it.”

Casablancas said he wanted the band to record the new album, which he says sounds a lot like their last album First Impressions Of Earth, without him so they could explore the music a bit more.

“I’m pretty opinionated,” he said. “Nothing pushy to the point of it’s my way or no way, but I’ll hear a song and be like, ‘Hmmm, it feels like the bass should be like something different’. Whereas if I feel like I wasn’t in the room then they could just kind of spread their wings.”

As for this summer, The Strokes are hitting up a few festivals including Lollapalooza and the Isle of Wight and RockNess festivals. Casablancas said the only reason the band are playing these shows at all is because they saw dollar signs.

“Should I say the truth? Money,” he said. “Yeah. The offers were so crazy that we had to say yes.”

At least he’s honest.
