I’m still surprised as to why I haven’t signed up for Third Man Records’ subscription service, The Vault. It might have to do with the fact that I’m broke as all hell but I’m heavily considering a career in theft to get enough money to sign up for the service.

My future life of crime could be due to the fact that the forthcoming package from the vault is quite huge. It includes a 7″ vinyl that features a remix of The White Stripes “The Hardest Button to Button” remixed by Beck and a remix of The Dead Weather’s “Hang You From The Heavens” done by Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan.

As if that weren’t enough, the package also includes a vinyl recording of The Raconteurs latest show at Third Man that took place last month. Also included is a recording of the label’s Devils Night performances done by The Greenhornes and The Black Belles last year.

Again, if you wish to sign up for The Vault (I’ll be doing so soon) head over here.

And 2011 just got way more exciting.

In an interview with Billboard (via CoS), Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita said his “number one priority” is recording a new Queens album in January.

“Everybody seems excited and ready to go,” Fertita adds. “We’ve got so many ideas started already; I guess we’ll see what turns out to be everybody’s favorite. It’s very much still (Josh Homme’s) band, but I think all of us really feel like we’ve found our space in it and can contribute to it as well.”

Fertita, who also plays guitar and keys in The Dead Weather, gave an update as to their musical status as well. “Everything seems to happen by accident with that band,” he says, “so who knows — maybe we’ll have a record together in another two weeks. I think we all love the way it works, so I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t try to keep it going at some point.”

Conan’s official website premiered the video for “Blue Blood Blues” which is live footage of the band playing the song at Third Man Records in Nashville, TN. I’m so glad a video goes with this song now as I’m a huge fan of the tune.

Here’s hoping we get more collabs between Conan and Jack White in the near future…like maybe an appearance on a late-night cable talk show that airs on TBS this September, for example. That would be cool. I mean since Conan went to Jack’s label and did that show recently, it would only be fair for Mr. White to return the favor. Hey, maybe he could bring Meg and her drums along!

It’s the middle of 2010 and I thought that we should take a look back at the past six months and, from all the albums that have been released, pick the Rock it Out! Blog’s top 7 albums of 2010…so far. This isn’t a ranked list since we’ve still got six months to go and it wouldn’t be fair to the new albums that may blow my mind in the next few months. So consider this a round up of the albums I feel stood out over the first half of the year. Here we go.

The Black Keys’ newest album, Brothers, is a tight blues-rock package that can easily be listened to while making you feel cooler than you ever have in your life. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, mixed with Danger Mouse’s production skills, bring songs that prove you don’t have to constantly distort your rock music to get a bad ass sound.

The Black Keys – “Howlin’ For You”

Let’s see. Jack White and Alison Mosshart + a sharp, loud album filled with tracks that make you want to get all sorts of down and dirty = album on the list. The Dead Weather knock it out of the park with Sea of Cowards. Songs like “Gasoline” and “Blue Blood Blues” bring the grittier, more violent side of blues-rock into the forefront and no one can deliver these songs like Mr. White.

The Dead Weather – “Blue Blood Blues”

Deftones return with Diamond Eyes which balances their harder edge while presenting songs that are softer yet still presentable. With all the shit that this band has been through with bassist Chi Cheng ending in the hospital, it’s amazing that they scrapped their original album, Eros, and put this together in a matter of months. One can only imagine what would happen if they put a year or more into this record. Our heads would probably explode.

Deftones – “Rocket Skates”

You may think I put American Slang on the list just because the band is from New Jersey…and that may be partially true. But the main reason is that this album is just awesome. Yes, while the comparisons to Springsteen will still be made (even by me), this New Brunswick band knows how to toe the line between punk and and that older rock sound you love listening to when you get good and plastered at the bar at 2 a.m.

The Gaslight Anthem – “Boxer”

I’ll be honest. When I first heard Plastic Beach I really wasn’t a fan. It didn’t have that same upbeat feel that made me love Demon Days so much. But after a few more listens (some whilst under an influence) you begin to hear the subtleties the album surprises you with. Plus, collaborations with Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg and members of the Clash definitely help to bring the album to another level. This is Gorillaz all growed up.

Gorillaz – “Rhinestone Eyes”

This album is on the list for one reason. MGMT has balls. Giant, brass ones. Their first album was chock full o’ singles and could have easily gone the same route for LP #2. But with Congratulations they threw out the rulebook and pretty much started from scratch. Singles? They don’t need no stinkin’ singles! They just need you to relax your mind and give this album a few listens.

MGMT – “Brian Eno”

I have to credit Alex Young from Consequence of Sound for getting me into this band. The National’s High Violet is an album that makes me wonder what lounge singers from the 40′s and 50′s would have sang if they had a band behind them. Matt Berninger’s baritone vocals don’t try to soar to heights unknown. They sit in a comfortable environment while still exuding a confidence that says “You can’t listen to this band any other way.”

The National – “Runaway”

The little vampire tweens that haunt America will soon be heading to theaters to catch the newest film in the Twilight series called Eclipse. Meanwhile, we’ll be heading to the record store to pick up the soundtrack from the movie.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse OST comes out on June 8th but it’s currently streaming over at our good friends’ website Some Kind Of Awesome. The album, like the previous Twilight soundtracks, is packed to the brim with the best in indie and alt-rock bands.

New tracks from The Black Keys, The Dead Weather, Vampire Weekend, Beck with Bat For Lashes, Metric, Florence + The Machine and more bring us what could be the most anticipated soundtrack of 2010. Honestly, if the movies were as good as the music, then I may have actually been a fan of this series. Let’s be grateful that I’m just a real big fan of music.

Oh and that new track from Muse is also on the OST but you can skip that one. No need to ruin your listening experience.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse tracklisting
Metric – Eclipse (All Yours)

May 11 draws nearer by the day which means The Dead Weather’s new album, Sea Of Cowards, will soon be released in record stores.

Now last week, on the Dead Weather’s website, they streamed the album in it’s entirety for 24 hours. While it’s a short album (a little over 30 minutes) it definitely packs a punch and got me excited as all hell for the new LP. But then TDW decided to up the ante a bit.

Yesterday, May 3rd, they played the album in its entirety live at Third Man Records for an extremely lucky audience. If you couldn’t be at Third Man like many of us, they also streamed the whole performance online. You can now see that performance down below. Added bonus! If you go to Some Kind Of Awesome you can download the entire performance to listen to whenever you want.

If you’re still not excited about the new album yet then I fear you may be brain-dead. Between the album, online performances and an upcoming North American tour, there should be no reason that Jack White doesn’t have you smiling from earlobe to earlobe.

Jack White is the man. There’s no other way to put it. I don’t think there’s been an artist we’ve covered on the RiO!B that had three separate stories written about them in one post until now.

First, Jack’s new band The Dead Weather (whose new album is insane, btw) have announced a whole new slew of tour dates (via Consequence of Sound). After performing at the Bonnaroo and Glastonbury festivals, TDW is set to rock North America with their first show kicking off on July 13th in Washington, D.C. All of those tour dates are listed below and tickets go on sale Friday, May 7th.

Secondly, also from our friends at CoS, we now know that Jack is ready to revive his first band The White Stripes. He spoke to The Guardian recently and said that he would like to get back with his “sister” Meg after a three-year hiatus due to her anxiety. He now feels that the anxiety is gone and wants to start working on White Stripes material again. Wonderful news!

Finally, from the good people at TwentyFourBit, Jack is preparing to work with none other than Jay-Z. After a one-off recording session in New York, Jigga is set to head down to Nashville to work on new music with Jack at Third Man Records headquarters in just a few weeks.

So, as I said at the top of this post, Jack White is the man. Don’t even try arguing with me about it because you’ll lose.
