Sad news for Weezer fans. The former bassist of the band, Mikey Welsh, has died at the age of 40. It was first posted on his Twitter page that Welsh had “unexpectedly” died on October 8th and that “he will forever be remembered.” However, it’s being reported by Billboard that Welsh died in a hotel room in Chicago. It’s suspected that drugs led to his death.

The members of Weezer also offered up their condolences via Twitter posting, “We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the awful news, our friend and fellow weez rocker @mikeywelsh71 has passed away. We love you Mikey.” Current Weezer bassist, Scott Shriner, also wrote “Really bummed about Mikey. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a talent… he made a special mark on the world with his art.”

Welsh joined Weezer in 2000 following Matt Sharp’s departure in 1998. He only stayed with the band until August 2001 but played on the band’s “Green Album”. Welsh left the band due to suffering from a mental breakdown and even attempted suicide before quitting. Following his departure, he focused on painting and large scale figures and abstracts.

Either this is a brilliant idea or the first sign that 2012 is indeed the end of the world.

When you think of rock bands and cruises, usually the bands playing on boats are older, washed up 80s acts that can barely fill any venue. But Weezer has taken this concept and applied it to their band and have brought many a hipster band along for the voyage.

Running from January 19-23, the cruise sails the high seas from Miami, FL to Cozumel, Mexico. While riding the waves towards your island in the sun, Weezer will be playing shows on the main deck of the ship. You’ll also get performances from Dinosaur, Jr., Wavves, Free Energy, The Antlers, Yuck, Yacht Rock Revue and more. Basically this cruise would be a hipster’s dream except that Weezer is a part of it.

So how much will it cost you to sail across the sea with the Weez? Just a mere $799…and that’s the cheapest price. So the best advice is to save your money and see them for $30 at a venue on terra firma. Unless you wanna stretch your sea legs along with Rivers Cuomo. Head to WeezerCruise.com for all the details, ye ironic landlubber.

Well it looks like we have a strong new contender for best soundtrack of 2011 and it comes from the Muppets. Yes indeed. The lives of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and all the rest will be soundtracked by the likes of My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Hayley Williams, Andrew Bird, Alkaline Trio and more. Muppets: The Green Album is in stores on August 23rd and the movie doesn’t hit theaters until November 23rd.

Classic songs from Muppet lore are on the OST including “Bein’ Green,” “Rainbow Connection” and, of course, the “Muppet Show Theme.” The full tracklisting is down below. You should be reminded that the movie stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams and will include a cameo from Dave Grohl.

Muppet: The Green Album tracklisting:
1. OK Go – Muppet Show Theme
2. Weezer and Paramore’s Hayley Williams – Rainbow Connection
3. The Fray – Mahna Mahna
4. Alkaline Trio – Moving Right Along
5. My Morning Jacket – Our World
6. Amy Lee – Halfway Down the Stairs
7. Sondre Lerche – Mr. Bassman
8. The Airborne Toxic Event – Wishing Song
9. Atreyu’s Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte’s Billy Martin – Night Life
10. Andrew Bird – Bein’ Green
11. Matt Nathanson – I Hope That Something Better Comes Along
12. Rachael Yamagata – I’m Going to Go Back There Someday

Weezer’s cover of The Cars’ “You Might Think” appears on the soundtrack for the movie Cars 2 which is currently in stores. Now you get the typical music video that comes with it that features the band performing the song and clips of the movie, which is in theaters on Friday, and casual shots of the band…..nothing really special. But Weezer’s version of the song is pretty good so if you’ve got three minutes, listen/watch and happily nod your head along to the beat.

After Weezer’s surprisingly good rendition of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android,” the nerd-rockers have taken on another cover. This time, they tackle The Cars classic track, “You Might Think,” which appears on the soundtrack for the movie, Cars 2.

I’m thinking Weezer may want to consider becoming a full-time cover band because they do this song justice. It’s still as catchy as the original while still having that Weezer-esque feel to it. Now if you head to the movies on June 24th to see Cars 2, the song appears in the scene where “Lightning McQueen and Mater go to Japan,” according to guitarist Brian Bell. The soundtrack for the movie is out on June 14th via Disney.
Well here’s an interesting combination that disturbingly seems to work. On July 28th and 29th in New Jersey and New York, Weezer, The Flaming Lips and Yeasayer will deliver a one-two-three combo to your braindome. The bands will first perform at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on the 28th and at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY on the 29th. Tickets for this wonderful musical clusterfuck go on sale May 7th at Ticketmaster (via CoS).

Following these shows, all three bands will go their own separate ways and you’ll wake up the next day wondering if what you just saw actually happened. For the record…it did. And you loved it.
